The Arsenal Football Club Medical Department is a multi-disciplinary function focused on providing world leading medical care and injury prevention/management to its professional elite players. The department is comprised of doctors, physiotherapists, researchers and other complementary disciplines, with the ultimate aim of achieving a holistic approach to player care.
Job Purpose
To act as First Team Physician and lead the Club's Medical Department by overseeing all aspects of player welfare, injury and illness diagnosis, recovery, rehabilitation and return to play.
To maximise player availability by ensuring the accurate prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries and operating a proactive approach to player care.
To uphold the highest standards of clinical practice, governance and ethics, in line with the General Medical Council (GMC) and all relevant football governing bodies (to include FIFA, UEFA, The FA and the Premier League).
Key Responsibilities
Department Management and Leadership
Lead the Medical Department on all aspects of player welfare, education and health screening, with a special interest in injury prevention and the ultimate aim of maximising player availability.
Ensure the Medical Department operates with the highest ethical and professional standards at all times, by overseeing the maintenance, publication and deliverance of best practice policies, procedures and protocols that form a "Code of Practice" for Arsenal Football Club. The protocols therein will cover all aspects of medicine from emergency care, to player welfare and day to day running of the Medical Department.
Pending developments issued by the Premier League, uphold relevant principles and standards of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in football.
Act as the Club's point of contact with the Premier League and relevant external stakeholders on medical matters; liaise with internal stakeholders on Club-wide clinical matters such as medical insurances, mental health & wellbeing, and other medical-related partners.
Ensure Arsenal Football Club's internal values and standards are being upheld and embodied at all times, across the department.
Work closely with the research and development department of Arsenal Football Club to ensure that the Club is at the forefront of the latest developments within elite sports science and medicine. Provide direction for relevant internal research with the aim of ensuring excellence in up to date player welfare provision, and coordinating publication as appropriate.
Oversee and play an active role in CPD activities within the Medical Department, promoting and facilitating appropriate staff development.
Manage departmental budget and undertake line management responsibilities of all relevant staff and workers.
Provide mentorship and direction to Arsenal Youth Academy and Arsenal Women Doctors.
Work with the Club's Loan Manager on issues of player welfare for First Team players who are on loan to other clubs based in the UK and abroad.
Clinical Duties
Provide comprehensive and specialist medical care for First Team players, acting as lead clinician for diagnosing illness and/or injury.
Hold ultimate accountability for the medical components of the new player transfer process, ensuring the Club has taken all reasonable steps to detect pre-existing pathology in new signings.
Be fully available during periods of Premier League transfer window so as to lead on medical components and to comply with insurance requirements.
Attend and hold accountability for the medical provision at all First Team fixtures (includes extensive travel within the UK and overseas).
Provide pitch side emergency cover during First Team training sessions and matches.
Liaise with the Head Coach and Assistant First Team Coaches on a daily basis, to provide updated progress reports and counsel on all issues of player injury and welfare.
Lead on interventions, referrals and second opinions from experts on First Team players' medical and surgical management and accompany players to significant medical appointments and surgeries, as appropriate.
Undergo medical health screenings of First Team players, including taking blood and neuro-psychometric testing, and deliver all aspects of player welfare and education.
Work alongside Club physiotherapists and other members of the wider medical team to provide medical expertise in the management of all injuries.
Liaise with national teams' medical staff regarding players on international duty.
Provide occasional, ad hoc medical advice to senior executive Club staff, should the need arise.
Governance and Anti-Doping
Hold ultimate accountability for all aspects of Whereabouts, drug and doping player information, and be available to oversee the doping process at both London Colney and at the Stadium, as required.
Guide and educate players to ensure full understanding of all medication taken and the principles of strict liability.
Ensure all player and staff interactions and all issued medications are recorded and detailed on the Club software database, in line with GMC requirements of contemporaneous note taking.
Main Job Requirements and Person Specification 
A medical practitioner of good standing on the General Medical Council (GMC) register with evidence of successful on-going appraisal and revalidation under the GMC.
A MSc / Diploma in Sports Medicine.
A current pitch side trauma/first aid/life support qualification.
A consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine (desirable only).
Specific Experience Required
Significant experience leading a department within professional elite sport (football desirable).
Experience treating and liaising with professional elite athletes.
Demonstrable evidence of on-going CPD in the major specialty of own work portfolio.
Excellent applied working knowledge of the FA Anti-doping and WADA regulations.
An understanding of Health and Safety and its application within a sporting environment.
Experience of working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Operates with the utmost integrity and has high standards of ethics.
Outstanding player management and communication skills.
Excellent communication skills with stakeholders at all levels of seniority.
Proven ability to integrate into a team environment.
Flexibility and adaptability to respond to the demands of elite football.
